The elegant Vat Phou

Cruising The Mekong to The Legendary 4,000 Islands

The mystical Vat Phou temple is nestled on the lower slope of the Phou Pasak range, a few kilometers from the town of Champassak.  This important Khmer monument which dates back from the tenth and thirteenth century is a magnificent site.  It consists of a series of terraces arranged at the foot of a mountain which rises up like a pyramid and is lined with fragrant Plumeria, the national tree of Laos.  The temple is still in remarkable condition and is widely regarded as one of the most outstanding examples of Khmer architecture still in existence.  The view from the sanctuary on the top across the Mekong plain, ringed by mountains is a truly breathtaking experience.

Your Itinerary
Day 1: Pakse- Vat Phou
Setting off in the early morning for the South River, lunch is served on board before docking at Champassak for a guided tour of the mysterious pre- Angkorian tenth century temple of Vat Phou, the boat's namesake. As dusk falls, explore the riverside and discover the local Laotian way of life.
Day 2: The 4,000 Islands
Arrive at Khong Island for a short stroll after a wholesome breakfast and then cruise around the 4,000 islands. Then a trip by road (or long tail boat according to the season) to the spectacular roaring falls of Phapeng for a picnic. A tasty dinner is later served on board.
Day 3: Oun Moung
Marvel at the delightful river life, villages and fisherman during the morning's cruise which stops at Oun Moung to visit an ancient Khmer sanctuary hidden in a tropical forests. Back on board for dinner. Night at Vat Phou Ngoy to enjoy the wonderful panorama of mekhong at sunset. Night is spent on board.
